Notes of Meeting 23 July 2020

Notes on Leigh on Mendip WI “Virtual” Meeting – Thursday 23 July at 7.30pm, online via “Zoom”

All members had been invited to join this meeting – although we do appreciate that not everyone has the access to enable them to do so.
10 members joined in for our virtual meeting.

Apologies
JWi, ED, HG, SR, AO, AP, SD

Recent Events
Denman College
Mary informed as that the NFWI Board of Trustees have announced with great sadness their proposal to close Denman permanently.  This is due to financial problems but there will be a period of consultation before a final decision will be made.  A number of our members over the years have attended courses and will really miss the opportunity of going to future events.  Mary encouraged members to continue with joining in the On-Line Courses, which at £5 a session are very good value for money.
WI Somerset Talks
Several of our members have signed up to these.  Some very interesting speakers.  Mary will pass on the information to members as and when she receives notifications.
The Hive, Shepton Mallet
SR has been.  Haberdashery & wool purchases are possible – all in a very organised and safe way.  There is also a small area inside and out for catering.
July Newsletter
Mary has written to all members encouraging them to send in a small article to either herself or Caroline by 26 July.  Suggestions for Books to Read were also encouraged.  Caroline has very kindly offered to collate and organise.
September WI Meeting
Mary confirmed that due to the current restrictions there will NOT be a meeting in the Hall in September and at the moment although the Committee have discussed this there are no plans in place.  She encouraged members to let us know as and when they would feel comfortable about meetings resuming.  We would have to abide rigorously by all Government guidelines.

Birthdays
We wished SV a Happy Birthday in person and also to AO (in her absence).

Boats & Ships – True or False?
Our Speaker for July was to be on Brunel – perhaps well known in this area for the SS Great Britain in Bristol.  We suggested to members that they might like to give a very brief story about an experience they had or might have had in a boat and then we would all vote True or False.  We heard some quite fascinating experiences.  The joint winners were Sue Vaughan and Caroline.  Well done to everyone who took part.

Members said Goodbye and are looking forward to the next session.
