Leigh on Mendip WI Meeting: Monday 9 December 2013 at 7.30pm in the Memorial Hall
Welcome and Apologies: Sparks welcomed, including Sara (Shelagh’s daughter). Apologies from Yvonne, Kathy, Hazel, Marguerite, Margaret and Sandra.
The minutes having been read by all members were agreed and Sparks will sign as a true record.
Matters Arising: The visit to the American Museum on 30 November had been much enjoyed as was the Christmas meal at The Duke of Cumberland on 3 December, lunch at The Woolpack 6 December, followed by an excellent Carol Service. The WI Stall at the Church Fair took £40. Sparks and Caroline enjoyed their visit to the Denman Christmas Fair. Sparks has put a lot of news and information on the blog for members to read.

County News: All members were handed their copy to read. Of particular interest:
‘Your Image & Style’ events in February next year. Sparks interested in going. Closing date 31 January. Anyone wanting to go to register their interest at the January meeting.
‘’Literacy Lunch’ on 14 March. Barbara interested in going. Closing date 28 February. Anyone wanting to go to register their interest at either January or February meetings.
Forthcoming Events:
65th Birthday Party - Saturday 25 January in the Village Hall, mid afternoon. Sparks wanted to confirm all members agreement to the arrangements. It has been decided to have an afternoon tea, from 3-5pm. As well as our members it was agreed to invite the Group Institutes (max 5 per Institute), Eileen and Hazel. Also wished to invite past members (Ann Wells, Trish Marable, Jacqueline Witt, Ann Wighton, Gladys, Sylvia, Jane Lynthorne, Pat Fry). Sparks will e-mail/contact other Institutes and Eileen & Hazel. Jan P had already offered to deliver invites to past members. No charge will be made for our visitors attending. It was agreed to go ahead with the Ukulele Band as the entertainment. It was agreed to decorate the Hall with balloons and have flower arrangements on the tables. Discussion took place around having a Birthday cake. It was agreed to have Cupcakes with at least one per table with ‘65’ decorated on top. Sara and Shelagh offered to make these. All members agreed to make a contribution in the way of other cakes, sandwiches and savouries and Sue Rodford offered to co-ordinate. It was agreed that any member who so wished can claim for their expenses in providing the food. It was also agreed to have a Photo of all members as the lasting record. Sparks said her son Tom would do this. At the January meeting members will be asked to sign up to help with setting up, decorating the Hall, serving, washing up and clearing away.
Correspondence: Buckland Dinham are arranging a visit to Chichester for the Flower Festival on 29 May. More info to follow. AGM next June will be in Leeds. Sparks offered to attend as our Rep. Observer tickets approx £18 + 2 nights in a hotel. Resolutions are in this month’s WI Life. Members were asked to read and complete their slips and give to Mary at the January meeting.
Treasurer’s Report: £825.63 in the Bank and £18.39 Petty Cash.
Birthdays: Jeni on 30 December.
January Meeting: Members asked to bring their subs of £34.70 and also a Raffle Prize for 2014.Members to get their photos for the January meeting to Caroline ASAP. It was agreed to continue supporting the Food Bank.
Barbara and Ann are doing refreshments. The committee will provide the nibbles and mulled apple juice. Tea and coffee will also be served.

Kathy, Yvonne and Sandra sent Happy Christmas wishes to all members. Kathy, Sandra and Mary have made charity donations in lieu of cards.
Church Christmas Fair made about £405.
Bingo in the Hall on 14 December. Run by the Rec Field Committee for the Pump Track.
Carol Service in the Church on 22 December.
Mary will complete the 2014 Tea Rota tonight.
Sparks then introduced Dawn Knowles who gave a short talk on how she first got interested in cooking and cake decoration and then gave a short workshop on making a sugarcraft Father Christmas. All members made one themselves to take home.

Welcome and Apologies: Sparks welcomed everyone, especially Brenda. 6 Apologies were given.
The minutes having been read by all members were agreed and signed by Sparks as a true record.
Matters Arising: The Wells Cathedral visit has been arranged for Friday 25 July 2014. A morning tour with Liz, with the opportunity for lunch, followed by an optional afternoon high tour.
Feedback: The YMCA shoe box was delivered to the Yeovil meeting. Lots of boxes were donated. In addition we filled 5 boxes for Operation Christmas Child. Those who attended enjoyed their lunch at the Mendip Inn. The December lunch will be at The Woolpack in Beckington, to coincide with the Carol Service. Members asked to sign up. 5 members attended the AGM in Yeovil. Excellent talks from inspiring speakers. More information is on our blog. We were awarded a certificate for our 65th birthday. Sparks was highly commended for her T-shirt entry in the competition.

‘National WI Centenary Celebrations’ in Somerset – a Jamboree ‘Alice in WI Land’ – planned for early 2015. Joan Knowlman gave a brilliant talk on this at the AGM.

Treasurer’s Report: £852.28 in the Bank and £23.89 Petty Cash. Hall rent paid for next year. 15 bags left to sell. ‘Fun with a Fiver’ quiz – sold 39, so made £19.50 each (half to Wilton Lodge).
Birthdays: Happy birthday to Shelagh and Sue R.
December Meeting: The speaker is unable to come so have invited the 2014 December speaker, Dawn Knowles, to come a year early! It will be on Cake Decorating – listening and ‘hands on’. Refreshments Sue R and June B. VOT: Barbara.
