Forthcoming Events:
Village Clean Up. This had been discussed at some length at the last Committee meeting as this year Mendip District Council have issued much stricter Guidelines. Most of this is common sense and is in line with how we have carried out litter picks over the past years. However, 2 issues are causing concern – the advice to avoid highways and roadsides and checking our insurance covers this event. Caroline had sought further advice from MDC who left it to our judgement. Jan had checked with National and the WI do not have the necessary insurance. It would be possible to get insurance (as an example Zurich quote £100). The members discussed both issues. It was agreed to avoid the main road south of the village but it would be impossible to litter pick in a village without being on the quiet lanes, which it was agreed would be safe, providing people take due care and attention and leave any heavy items for MDC to remove at a later date. It was suggested that the Parish Council might consider paying or helping towards the cost of £100 for the Insurance. However, this was felt to be expensive – regardless of who paid. It was agreed that our Institute is not in a position to bear this cost, especially as it would be an ongoing annual cost. It was agreed to go ahead with the proviso that anyone taking part would be informed of the general risks and be informed that they would carry on at their own risk. It was agreed that a site visit and risk assessment would be carried out. The MDC form will be signed and returned. An advert will be placed in the Parish Magazine for this event to take place on 15 March.
