Record of
Leigh-on-Mendip WI Meeting – Monday 8th November 2021 at 7.30 in Memorial Hall.
Caroline thanked everyone for attending, clarified the COVID
safety measures – hands, space, face and thanked everyone for following the
guidelines.
Apologies:
Marguerite, Barbara, Betty, Karen, Sue R.
Record of last
meeting held on 11th October: Agreed by those present and signed as a true
record.
Matters
arising/feedback:
• Caroline
asked if members found it helpful to receive a reminder about the upcoming
meeting. There was a unanimous, Yes.
• Thanks to
Sue Adams and Karen Stoneley for organizing the teas and cleaning rotas.
• Thanks to
members for the contributions to the YMCA boxes – and specials thanks to Mary
and Collette for sorting and creating our boxes, (12 total) and to Denis for
impeccable wrapping.
• Concerning
our Change of Name – Caroline contacted all members to canvas their views. The
final count was 10 (no change), 11 (Live Wires), 3 (Leigh Lillies), 2 (Ladies
of Leigh). It was agreed that there was not enough of a mandate for change
currently and we would leave it open for discussion and revisit.
• Our
speakers/events are now finalized for 2022. There are 9 speakers in total and
Caroline asked for a list of 9 volunteers to give a vote of thanks to each. Kaz
is compiling this.
• Caroline
has forwarded a statement from Emma Holland-Lindsay, NFWI Head of Public
Affairs, about the WI’s involvement with Cop26 and the role that the
organization plays in protecting the planet.
Forthcoming events:
• Monday
6th December, 7 for 7.30, will be our Christmas meal and get together in the
Bell Inn. There are 25 of us so far. We will be in the newly refurbished
skittle alley. We will check ventilation and spacing of tables beforehand.
• Many
thanks to all for donations to the food bank. These were delivered by June the
following day.
• For our
next meeting on 13th December, we will all be making a table centerpiece. Thanks
to Karen for organizing.
County News: We
have received a few hard copies. Iris is now added in. Does anybody else want

Caroline welcomed our speaker, Neil Clarke with his
presentation/film on The Bristol Channel Islands.
A 45mins tour around the 3 ‘hidden/little known’ islands off
the coasts of Somerset (Steep Holm), Wales (Flat Holm), and North Devon
(Lundy). Brilliantly presented with stunning film footage highlighting the
natural beauty and mystery of all three. Packed with interesting facts about
the history of the islands. From Roman, Norman and Viking invasions, through to
being used as a military base during Victorian times and a strategic defence
site throughout the first and second world wars. They all too, had a
reputation, due to their many coves and inlets of being used by smugglers. Steep
Holm particularly, boasts of the many legends around Captain Kidd.
It was very engaging and uplifting.
